Anantapur District is drought-prone district having the distinction of 2nd lowest rainfall area in India. Normally 33% of forest was needed to balance the ecology. But Anantapur district is having 11% of Forest, which need to be raised by another 22%. This can be achieved only through protecting the existing forest area, and promoting greenery (through activities like afforestation, avenue plantation etc.). To achieve this awareness is needed among the communities irrespective of age, sex, caste and creed.
Formation of Eco-Clubs is an activity to involve the children in this activity as we believe that they can play a key role, as they are the future representatives of the country.
With this view, Jeevana Sravanthi Drought Association has formed children groups in the Schools by the name of “Eco-clubs”. As on date, it has formed 40 clubs in the Government Schools in 4 Mandals i.e., Puttaparthi, Bukkapatnam, Mudigubba and Nallamada Mandals. These clubs have a membership of 1547 students, who are involved in the eco-environmental promotional activities. Regular camps of plantation are carried through these clubs with the support of their school teachers and parents.
Through the Eco-Clubs the parents are mobilized to take up plantation. Backyard horticultural plants like coconut, curry leaf, mango etc., were supplied to the families to plant in their backyards.
